Fun Fact 2; Soldiers would sing songs about their love, they would sing songs like “Aura Lee” which Elvis Presley turned into “Love Me Tender.”
Music Making a Change
One of the songs making a big change was “The Bonnie Blue Flag,” which was a pro-confederate song. This song was very popular in the Confederacy, it was heard almost everywhere. The Union General Benjamin Butler was so angry that he found all the printed copies of the song, put the publisher in jail and threatened everyone-even children-that sang the song or hummed the tune.
Once Robert E. Lee surrendered, Lincoln asked a Union band to play the song “Dixie.” No one could miss what the song was really about, it was a sort of "neener, na na!" in Robert's face. There are lots of different versions, the lyrics seem to vary, but the most popular is by Dan Emmett.
